🤔 What are your rates?

🙂 I charge an hourly rate of £35 and a day rate of £275 with no vat to add. My rate is based on what an established professional painter/decorator charges (source below). With that in mind I arrive at what is, I hope, a fair rate for a professional service.

🤔 How much will it cost to re-finish my table/chairs/sideboard etc?

🙂 Dining table prices can start from around £180+ for smaller size 1 piece table tops and from around £240 + for tables with separate leaves and if your table seats 8 or more then £320+ is the likely price area. Chair refinishing prices start (at lowest) from around £70 – 85 per chair (when in number) to re-finish based on their existing finish and any detail (or lack of).
Small sized sideboards can start from around the £280 area and going higher in price if large or with dresser tops for example.

🤔 How long does it take to re-finish an item of furniture ?

🙂 Generally about 3 weeks with modern finishes and lacquer paints though quicker turnarounds can be arranged if needed. French polished items can take around 4 – 6+ weeks (being a traditional slow hardening material).

🤔 Do you re-finish Pine/Softwood Furniture ?

🙂 Yes regularly, both in paint and clear lacquer finishes or a combination of both. When using paint lacquer softwood demands a barrier primer (instead of a standard primer) to counter knots and resin which leach through paint months or years later if this isn’t undertaken. You can also bleach pine furniture if looking for a less orangey/warm tone.

🤔 Is there a collection & delivery charge?

🙂 For most Island addresses I usually add £10 to the job quote for taking your job away and delivering it back to you to cover fuel and time costs – this could be a bit more if it’s a larger item that needs another helper if you cannot provide a lift with myself.

🤔 What methods of payment do you accept?

🙂 Bank Transfer, Debit/Credit Card, Cheque or Cash are all acceptable forms of payment.

🤔 Is VAT added onto my job price?

🙂 No it’s not as I’m not a VAT registered business.

🤔 Can I ask about something not covered here?

I’m Sean Jackson and I’ve been involved in wood finishing in one capacity or another for nearly 40 yrs. I’m a sole trader who undertakes the finishing and re-finishing of furniture in both paint and clear lacquer finishes.

I can provide estimates for jobs from pictures I receive and I also visit homes and premises to provide quotes for jobs. I have zero social media presence, just this website and the phone and I am happy to receive your enquiry on either.

Ramblings:

…while filling another tax return as usual this year my accountant said ‘Sean, your a 50 something year old skilled craftsman and you’d actually be better off flipping burgers, do you know that?’

Rudeness I thought to myself! …your probably right I said (she definitely was), but I’ve done this most of my life (more or less) and it’s what I know and do well I hope, but above all that I would not be good around food all day I said! 😀

Anyway with that said and the ever increasing cost of living we are all experiencing I try and give clients the best price I can and do always recommend getting more than one quote if possible.
